So, you’ve found yourself on the Agile path. You think you know everything you need to transform your teams into powerful agile squads. You’re on your way to a transformation. And then, the reality sets in. All of this represents change. And change is fundamentally scary for people.

It’s at this point, you’re going to need something more than knowledge. Your survival skills will be your ability to stay on the job, on point, while resistance approaches you from all sides.

There are two components. First, can you stay strong when everything around you is falling apart? When you’re supported only in theory – not in practice? When your teams are getting agile, but only in a waterfall way that suits “the way they’ve always done things”?

Next – can you deliver on really hard things? Agile is a lot of “easy to say, hard to do”. There are many tests involved in delivering work – whether you use agile or not. You have to ruthlessly prioritize. You must relentlessly focus on value. You need to resist the temptation to do the easiest thing first. You must know how to respond when things don’t work the way you thought they would. All while inspiring, motivating, and caring for a real living, breathing team.

Here’s where the grit comes in.

You have to get good at doing the hard things. And don’t forget – you’ll need to be able to show your teams how to do the same. What good is it to have all this grit and resilience if it disappears, the minute you leave the team room? No, you’re going to have to be much stronger than that. This job demands your best. It needs you at your strongest

So, I’ll say the unpopular thing. What’s required here is not so much empathy and sensitivity, but strength. You need to be strong to do this job. You need to be strong to lead other people. You need to be strong to learn how to influence people in all situations. No matter what the conditions are.
