Today I’m going to write about one of the elephants in the room.
We know that mindset matters when it comes to Agile success. One of the textbook success factors is “supportive management”, which we all agree is corporate speak for leaders who don’t slow us down, and don’t get in our way. We also want flat team structures.
That’s a whole lot of easier said than done. When you are involving owners and stakeholders in the team room, you’re asking them to forget that they’ve got titles, to leave their rank at the door, stop directing and controlling, and just participate.
It seems logical that we should value flat hierarchies, but in reality, it’s really tough for a Scrum Master to request and enforce them.
1) Those who insist on having others respect and observe their power probably shouldn’t have any in the first place.
2) Power of almost every kind doesn’t authorize others to minimize your sovereignty, your worth, your ideas.
3) Legitimate power is the ability to make things happen in your universe. Sometimes that involves ethical influence, but it also involves persistence, drive and passion for achieving things of lasting value to others.
4) For this reason, corporate power is largely artificial. The worst someone can do is take your job from you, at which point their ‘superior rank’ over you ceases completely.
